Located at the junction of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 599, Ignace is in the heart of Ontario's Sunset Country. Tourism and forestry support a population of 1,700 people and Ignace is an important service centre in the Region. This area has many lakes, rivers and forested land that offer locals and visitors excellent hunting and fishing. Whether you are looking for a remote wilderness experience, family vacation area, or just a terrific beach to try during your highway travels, the Township of Ignace welcomes you! Join us in our annual celebration during "White Otter Days" in July. You can shop at a number of retail stores and stock up on all your supplies or grab a bite to eat at several restaurants. Visit the Ignace Travel Centre on Highway 17 West for travel information on the area. Don't miss visiting the Heritage Museum located next to the Tourist Centre.

HISTORY OF IGNACE:
Founded in 1879, Ignace has a rich history of frontier spirit and resource development. Since that time, Ignace has forged through a myriad of activities including the early construction of the CPR railway in the early 1900�s to the Trans Canada Highway and Pipeline development throughout the 1950�s and 1960�s. These particular activities led to the natural resource development of mining, logging and tourism.

MAIN INDUSTRIES:
Although forestry is the main industry, a large portion of the population is self-employed. Local businesses include grocery and hardware stores, clothing and gift outlets, as well as numerous restaurants and motels.

MUSEUM:
The Ignace Public Library & Museum provides an abundance of information on the local community and interactive displays.

VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE:
The Ignace Tourist Attraction Centre offers a wide variety of local brochures as well as information on a variety of surrounding communities. A large pond, overflowing with flowerbeds, picnic tables, a playground, and nature trails, surrounds the beautifully architectured building. The public library is just down the boardwalk, which is great for tourists, visiting the area. We also have indoor public bathrooms that are open year round for the convenience of our tourists.

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS OR �MUST-SEES� IN IGNACE:
Ignace has many special attractions in the area. There are two beautiful sandy beaches, which are located on Agimak Lake. The lake is safe to swim in and it also had excellent fishing. Residents say that Agimak Lake had the best tasting Walleye (pickerel) in the area. We have an area for skating, a bowling alley and fitness centre, a golf course, numerous parks, canoeing, hiking trails, a public library, museum and much more!

HIKING TRAILS IN AREA:
The locally operated IWOC trails provide walking trails right in the heart of Ignace, which in the wintertime is used as a cross-country ski trail. A network of groomed snowmobile trails pass through Ignace interconnecting many destinations in Northwestern Ontario and the United States.

PUBLIC BEACHES IN THE SURROUNDING AREAS:
There are a couple public beaches in the surrounding area. In town, there is Agmak Public Beach and West Beach on Agimak Lake. Agimak Public Beach has a playground, a pavilion that you can use for barbecues, and water so shallow that you can walk out far into the lake which makes it safe for people of all ages. West Beach offers a pavillion, a boat launch, and a dock for swimmers, which separates the shallow water from the deep water. Both beaches also have changerooms and public bathrooms for the convenience of everyone.

CHURCHES IN AREA:
There are four churches in the area. There is a Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and Gospel Church that welcomes everyone to visit.

PUBLIC BOAT LAUNCHES IN AREA:
There is a public boat launch located at West Beach on Agmak Lake. There are also several lakes in our area that are accessible by driving. Stop by the Ignace Tourists Attraction Centre or our local bait shops to find out more.

HOSPITAL OR NURSING STATION:
Ignace has a Mary Burgland Community Health Centre that offers many services to the community.

PICNIC AREAS OR PARKS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY:
There are many picnic areas within our community. You can visit our beaches, which have pavillions and picnic tables, the Tourist Attraction Centre, and many other beautiful places within our community.

WINTER ACTIVITIES:
Ignace offers such a beautiful terrain that you can cross-country ski anywhere. The Trans Canada Trail that runs through Ignace is an excellent area to ski.
